Web 2.0, Social Networking, Blogs, Podcasts, News Feeds, RSS, XML, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube. The list goes on. A lot has changed since the Sacramento Conference and area Lutheran congregations first went online with web sites in the mid-1990s. There are now a plethora of tools and services that make communicating so multifaceted and it's hard to know which is the right trend to follow, and which flash-in-the-pan services will still be popular a few months from now. But it's all about community, and community is you, your congregations and those whom we serve and partner with.

The embrace of the World Wide Web (a term that seems archaic now) by local congregations has been very successful. Most congregations maintain a web site, and all are connected via e-mail. Now, the Sacramento Conference is moving ahead and exploring a number of the latest technologies in the social networking space. We will be featuring a workshop at the November 2nd Fall Assembly to report to and assist those that wish to join this new information revolution. However, it's not too early to start exploring and get familiar with these new tools and how they can benefit you in information retrieval and improved communication.

These are just a few of the services now offered through the Sacramento Conference web site at http:/SacramentoConferenceELCA.org

Calendar of local Lutheran Events

Twitter Feed

Facebook group invitations

RSS feed of Conference news items

Access to important church year dates, festivals and commemorations

The latest lectionary readings

And of course, links to local Lutheran resources.

Check out the web site and associated resources. Participate in the social networking elements. Be active!

LWR Ingathering Event in Morgan Hill

Posted: Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Dear Friend in Christ,

Lutheran World Relief (LWR) will be hosting an “Ingathering” which is a local, Northern California event for churches to drop off their donated quilts, kits, and soap. This Ingathering will be October 3rd and 4th at Advent Lutheran Church in Morgan Hill, California. Morgan Hill is 15 miles south of San Jose.

At the Ingathering, a truck or trailer will be parked at Advent. Representatives from all ELCA and LCMS churches in the surrounding area, including yours, are invited to bring your sewn items and soap to the truck. These items will then be shipped to the LWR warehouse, for packing and shipping to their partners around the world.

The purpose of this letter is to encourage you to share this information with your woman’s group, sewing group, or any interested members of your church. I realize that as the recipient of this letter, you yourself may or may not know about LWR and its mission, or may not know if there are people in your congregation that may be interested in this program. Because of this, I ask that you please do not discard this e-mail, but pass it on to several of your members for their discussion and interest. LWR will be announcing this event very soon through their publications and in district/synod newsletters.

I am a member of Advent Lutheran and have been in discussion with Brenda Meier who is the LWR Director for Parish and Community Engagement. I will be serving as a local contact for LWR and the Ingathering at Advent. I am very excited about how God is opening doors for us Lutherans in the “Bay Area and Beyond” to be able to have a drop off site locally. Previously, the closest Ingathering was in the Los Angeles area or Portland, Oregon.

More information about the LWR quilts, kits, and soap can be found at this website:

http://www.lwr.org/parish/index.asp

(On the link, look on the column on the right hand side, under “Material Resource Projects” for quilts, layettes, health kits, school kits, sewing kits, sewing fabric, and soap for more information. There is additional valuable information on the website.)

What you can do:

1) Today, pass this information on to interested parties at your church.

2) Have your contact person connect with me so I know your level of interest; I can also answer questions you may have. I would enjoy hearing back by early August. It is very important that I hear back from your congregation! (I will then pass on more information to your contact person.)

3) Quilt, and gather materials and soap! October is very soon, but the need is extreme, and the support of churches in this area will show LWR that we can support an Ingathering in our location. Even if we start out with a small amount from your church and other churches, it is the start of something big! This event will be the first of regularly scheduled Ingatherings.

Thank you for your interest. I am looking forward to hearing from you. If you need to ensure validity of this letter, you may contact my church, Advent Lutheran, in Morgan Hill. Pastor Anita Warner and her staff are well aware, and very supportive, of this upcoming Ingathering!

God’s blessings!
