Lutherans ALIVE! tapes 50th Show

Posted: Monday, May 2, 2005

On April 28, 2005, Sacramento Lutheran Television (SLTV) achieved another milestone by taping the 50th episode of "Lutherans ALIVE!," its weekly foray into spiritually uplifting local Lutheran television programming. It will conclude its second season with three additional shows to be taped in May. The final six shows will air weekly, beginning Saturday, May 7, on Sacramento Comcast Channel 19 (RCCTV) at 8 PM, and continue through June 11. Dixie Schneider and Gary Olson, both of Advent Lutheran Church in Citrus Heights, are the show's regular host and co-host, and Jim "Fingerz" Jordan (Gethemane, Carmichael) is the show's musical director. Roger Linder (Calvary, Rio Linda) and Diane Lowe (Lutheran Church of the Master, Sacramento) are the show's executive producers as well as the principal officers of SLTV. Rounding out the show's more spiritual side are the regular devotional pastors, Pastor Frank Espegren (Advent), Pastor Marty Lettow (Calvary) and Pastor Steve Krogh (Grace, Rancho Cordova.)

Plans for a third season of Lutherans ALIVE! are tentative, pending continued financial support from the local Lutheran community. Each episode of Lutherans ALIVE! costs approximately $250 to produce, including broadcast costs for an original airing and a subsequent rerun. Ten congregations of the Sacramento Conference have provided monetary gifts. In addition, a number of individuals, the Sacramento Conference and the Sierra Pacific Synod Witness and Service Discipling team have also provided financial support. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has been a significant sponsor with matching funds and a grant from the Lutheran Development Society of Sacramento was instrumental in making season two a reality. As a result, SLTV brings its programming into thousands of homes in the Sacramento viewing area each Saturday night.

Aside from continuing financial needs, one of the major concerns has been the limited distribution of the program. In order to address this SLTV has taken the first tentative steps into providing its programming via streaming broadcasts on its web site. While web viewing is limited to those with a high-speed (DSL or cable) Internet connection, the flexibility of scheduling and the ability to provide the programming around the clock to a worldwide audience is a great advance. Future plans include providing both seasons online, as well as new, original programming that will only be available online. This exciting new ministry direction will enable SLTV to bring the message of God's saving grace along with wholesome entertainment to a brand new audience.
