JOINT SACRAMENTO AREA CAMPUS MINISTRY BEING FORMED

Posted: Friday, February 14, 2003

ELCA CONGREGATIONS NEEDED AS SPONSORS

A new regional campus ministry is taking shape, under the guidance of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California's Campus Ministry Commission and Lutheran Episcopal Campus Ministry at The Belfry (www.thebelfry.org).

ELCA CONGREGATIONS in the Sacramento and Foothills conference are wanted to join in co-sponsoring and participating in this new STUDENT AND YOUNG ADULT CAMPUS MINISTRY. If your congregation has interest in campus ministry, or is near a campus, or has young adult ministry programming, or can offer free meeting space, financial support, or other resources-- please come to our next CAMPUS MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT MEETING:

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 7:30 PM, at Lutheran Church of the Cross (45th and H Streets), Sacramento. INTERESTED CLERGY AND/OR LAY LEADERS are invited to attend to learn more and find out how to participate as congregational sponsors.

There is also an urgent need for Lutheran or Episcopal FACULTY SPONSORS for student clubs forming at the Cosumnes, Folsom Center, and CSUS campuses. REFERRALS to faculty members in your congregation would be a great help!

This ministry is envisioned to be a joint Lutheran and Episcopal ministry, serving CSUS and the Los Rios Community College District campuses. Largely student-organized and -led, young adults gather monthly for fellowship and programs (eg, worship, workshops, meals, etc.). Students also organize local gatherings on several area campuses (eg, Bible studies, fellowship, prayer groups, etc.)

SACM has been underway since October 2002, with five Episcopalian congregations participating, and with financial support of a grant from the Evangelical Episcopal Education Society. The one-year grant supports a 1/4-time ministry coordinator, DEACON ANNE SLAKEY. (Anne served last year at The Belfry, doing field education.)

Three area ELCA congregations (Atonement, Cross, St. John's) have already expressed support for the ministry at its first development meeting on January 16. How about yours???

CONTACT for info or with interest, or to RSVP:

DEACON ANNE SLAKEY (sactobury@aol.com)
LUTHERAN CAMPUS PASTOR STEVE SIMMONDS (pastor@thebelfry.org).
